Modifiers

Modifiers parametrically alter the geometry of existing elements, primarily room edges

Understanding and Using Modifiers in Higharc Studio

Modifiers are transformations that are used to dynamically adjust the perimeter of Rooms & Blocks or Roofs. They allow you to create variations like extensions, pop-outs, or shifted elements without duplicating entire rooms or blocks, keeping your models clean and efficient.

What are Modifiers?

Think of a Modifier as a defined geometric translation (a move) that can be applied conditionally to specific edges or other supported entities. Instead of manually moving an edge for an optional feature, you create a Modifier that dictates how the edge should move (Translation) and when it should move (Condition).

Modifiers are applied to a Room Edge to dynamically adjust their location on the X and/or Y axis using integers.

When Should You Use Modifiers?

Modifiers are the ideal tool for specific scenarios, primarily when:

  1. An Option Requires Pushing/Pulling Existing Walls: The most common use case is for structural options that extend or modify the footprint along an existing wall line.

    • Example: Extending a 2-car garage to a 3-car garage where the back or front wall remains co-linear.

    • Example: Adding an optional bay window or a shallow pop-out to a room for a specific elevation style.

    • Example: Offering an optional room extension that increases its depth or width.

  2. An Option Requires Shifting Non-Structural Elements: When adding a structural option necessitates moving associated site elements or simple room blocks.

    • Example: Moving an exterior HVAC pad room sideways when a garage extension is added next to it.

When Not to Use Modifiers:

  • Non-Optional Changes: If a geometric change is permanent and not tied to an option, simply model it directly (e.g., move the edge manually, redraw the room shape).

  • Adding Disconnected Geometry: If an option adds a completely new, separate room or structure (like a detached garage or a significantly offset third garage bay), it's better to model that as a separate Room or Block and apply the condition directly to that Room/Block.

How to Create and Use Modifiers

  1. Create the Modifier:

    • Navigate to the Project Browser > Explorer tab.

    • Find the Modifiers section near the bottom.

    • Click the + icon to add a new Modifier.

    • Select the new Modifier ("Modifier 1" by default).

  2. Name the Modifier:

    • In the Inspector panel, give the Modifier a clear, descriptive Name (e.g., "3-Car Garage Side Extension," "Elevation B Pop-Out"). This is crucial for organization.

  3. Associate Entities (What to Modify):

    • In the Modifier's Inspector, find the Entities section.

    • Click the + Add Entities button. The prompt will ask you to select entities in the Canvas.

    • Carefully select the specific Edge(s) of the Room(s) that this Modifier should affect. You can select edges on multiple levels if the modification applies vertically (e.g., a two-story pop-out). Roof edges and railing paths can sometimes also be associated.

    • Press Enter to confirm the selection. The associated edges will be listed under Entities.

  4. Define the Translation (How it Moves):

    • In the Modifier's Inspector, locate the Translation section.

    • Specify the distance the associated edge(s) should move along the X, Y, or Z axes. For plan modifications, you'll primarily use X and Y. Enter values in inches (e.g., 120 for 10 feet, -24 for a 2-foot inward move).

    • Graphical Method (Recommended): With the Modifier selected, you can often activate a manipulator in the 2D Canvas (sometimes looks like a paintbrush or axis arrows). Click and drag the associated edge visually to its new modified position. Higharc will automatically calculate and populate the required X/Y/Z Translation values in the Inspector based on your graphical move.

  5. Apply the Condition (When it Activates):

    • This is the most important step for making the Modifier optional.

    • In the Modifier's Inspector, click the Apply Condition button (or the + if a condition already exists).

    • Define the condition just like you would for any other entity:

      • Select the relevant Option Set (e.g., "Garage Type," "Elevation").

      • Choose the Operator (usually == Equals).

      • Select the specific Value that should trigger this Modifier (e.g., "3-Car," "Elevation B").

  6. Test:

    • Go to the Active Options panel in the Project Browser.

    • Toggle the relevant Option on and off to ensure the Modifier activates and deactivates the geometric change correctly.

Examples

Example 1: Optional 3-Car Garage Extension

  • Goal: Extend the side wall of a 2-car garage outwards by 10 feet when the "3-Car" option is selected.

  • Steps:

    1. Create Modifier: Name it "3-Car Side Extension".

    2. Associate Entities: Select the side Edge of the Garage room.

    3. Define Translation: Set Translation Y to 120 (assuming Y is the direction of extension).

    4. Apply Condition: Set Condition to Garage Type == 3-Car.

Example 2: Elevation-Specific Pop-Out

  • Goal: Add a 2-foot deep pop-out to the front wall of a first-floor Dining Room, only for "Elevation B".

  • Steps:

    1. Create Modifier: Name it "Elev B Dining Pop-Out".

    2. Associate Entities: Select the front Edge of the Dining Room.

    3. Define Translation: Set Translation X to -24 (assuming X is the front/back direction and negative moves outwards).

    4. Apply Condition: Set Condition to Elevation == Elevation B.

Summary

Modifiers are essential tools for managing option-driven geometric changes in Higharc Studio. By associating a specific Translation (move) with designated Edges and linking it to an Option via a Condition, you can efficiently model variations like extensions and pop-outs without cluttering your project with duplicate geometry. Remember to name them clearly and always test by toggling the associated options.
