Stairs
Stairs can be created between levels using Stair Systems in the Explorer.
Stair Systems
Stair Systems, located in the Explorer, is where stairs & landings are created.
Select the ‘+’ under Stair Systems to create a new stair systems.
Under the Inspector, the new stair system will appear. It can be named and basic dimension parameters and settings can be managed here.
At the bottom of the Stair System Inspector, select the ‘+’ at Stair Blocks to add a new stair run or landing.
Stairs can be adjusted using the toggles at the edges.
The stair can be placed aligned to existing Datums or Edges.
The treads can be justified to a stair edge.
General Stair Placement
To get started:
Create aligning rooms between levels.
Set the room type for each room as ‘Stairs Editor’.
To create aligning walls between Levels:
Lock the lower level so that these edges and rooms can't be selected.
Make the upper level active.
Create the stair room directly above the lower stair room, utilizing snaps to corners.
Change the room type for the lower and upper.
Stair Placement Types
Stair placement is controlled in the Inspector panel. Stair Blocks are positioned in the model using one of two placement types: Datums or Edges. A placement type must be set on the upper and lower landing of a stair for it to work.
Access Placement Settings
To open a stairs placement settings:
In the Explorer panel, select the Stair Block (such as a Run) under Stair Systems.
In the Inspector panel, locate the Placement section.
The Placement section contains an Upper Landing group and a Lower Landing group. Each group has its own Landing Type dropdown with the options Edge and Datum. Upper and lower landings can use different placement types.
Place Stairs Using Datums
Datum placement positions a stair between two Datums, such as a porch level and grade.
Under Upper Landing, set Upper Landing Type to Datum.
Select the Datum from the Vertical Datum dropdown. In this example, the upper Vertical Datum is set to 1st Floor > porch.
Under Lower Landing, set Lower Landing Type to Datum.
Select the Datum from the Vertical Datum dropdown. In this example, the lower Vertical Datum is set to grade.
Note: Datums are created and managed at each Level in the Explorer panel. For more information, see Rooms and Blocks.
Automatic Landings with Generic Stairs
When Construction type is set to 'Generic' and both landings are set to Datum, stretching the stair automatically adds landings. This behavior is only available with the 'Generic' construction type. Other construction types, such as 'Monolithic', do not add landings automatically.
Place Stairs Using Edges
Edge placement attaches a stair to an Edge of a Room. The Room that receives the stair is called the Host.
Under Upper Landing, set Upper Landing Type to 'Edge'.
In the Host dropdown, select the Room the stair will attach to.
Set Host Edge Id to the number of the Edge on the Host Room where the stair will be placed.
Set Child Edge Id to the number of the Edge on the stair that will meet the Host Edge.
Note: Vertical Datum is not used when Upper Landing Type is set to Edge, and the field is empty.
Note: If the stair appears on the wrong Edge or faces the wrong way, change the Host Edge Id and Child Edge Id until the stair sits where you want it. In this example, the Host Edge Id is 4 and the Child Edge Id is 3.
Fine-Tune Edge Placement
After setting the Host and Edges, use these fields to adjust the stairs position:
Horizontal Alignment: Choose Left, Center, or Right to align the stair along the Host Edge.
Enter a distance to shift the stair along the Host Edge from its alignment point. Use the toggle beside the field to switch between % and inches.
Lateral Offset: Enter a distance to move the stair perpendicular to the Host Edge, such as when the stair sits too close to the wall. Negative values move the stair in the opposite direction.
Tip: When a stair is placed on an Edge, the stair follows that Edge if the Edge is moved.
Railings
Railings can be placed hosted to Stairs, Porches or Edges in Studio. Railings are located in the Explorer, under Stair Systems.
To create a Railing:
Select the ‘+’ under Railings to place a new railing in the model.
Select the ‘+’ next to Path to create a new railing path. Assign the railing to a level.
Select a railing type from Settings > Base Setting.
Railings can be modified using the Rails, Posts, Balusters under Settings after a Base Railing is selected.
Create Custom Railings
Custom railings can be created in the Railing Catalog Settings in the Engine. Create a new railing, modify the Rails, Posts and Balusters to reference this railing throughout the model and inherit to other models.
