Props and Casework
Props and Casework are furniture, built in millwork and appliances hosted to Higharc Studio models. Props and Casework are hosted to Rooms and Edges via the Inspector Panel in Studio.
Props are a fixed assets and can not be edited. Casework is generated directly inside your studio model, you have a little more flexibility here.
Once a Room is created and a Room Type is selected, Higharc will create automated layouts with props and casework within the room based on the default layout settings. To override any automated layouts in a room:
Select the Room.
Navigate to the Layout tab in the Inspector
Uncheck Use Built-in Layout checkbox. (You can select multiple rooms and make this action all at once)
Catalogs
Props and Casework custom-made for your organization are loaded and stored in the CDM or Reference File using Catalog Settings under Engine. Once a builder account is created with Higharc, custom items and props can be created, unique to the organizations needs.
Default props and casework are included in all files for basic layouts.
Prop Catalog
You're props are created inside a Global Setting, as Catalog Settings. They are separated in two types: Interior and Exterior. These items include exterior decorative items, appliances and furniture applied to Studio models.
Interior Props - are programmed to respond to Room associations.
Exterior Props - are programmed to respond to Exterior conditions. They will be shown in elevations as default, for example.
To access information about a prop’s identity, default placement, materials & documentation settings you should open these prop catalogs. Many of these properties can also be overridden for a specific Prop instance placed in a Room.
See below for more information about the behavior of the following properties:
Identity
Prop Category: controls which
Typethe prop be in Estimate reporting. Also used to control the visibility & styling of props in Live Plans via corresponding View Template categoriesNote:
Foliagecategory props will only appear in Realistic style Live Plans 3D viewports
Estimate Description: reports to the
Descriptionin EstimateFloor Plan Tag: automated Note in your plans
Placement defines how the text above will be positioned.
Materials
Use Exterior Palette: controls which palette (interior & exterior material palettes) will be selected for said prop.
Drawings
Show On Elevation And Perspective Views: makes the the prop visible in elevations, perspectives & section views
Note: props used as brackets via Roof settings will always be visible on elevation & perspective views, regardless of the settings applied in the prop catalog
Exclude From Foundation Plan Dimensions: omits a prop from the foundation dimensions, but still draws the prop geometry (if the appropriate Plan Settings & Plumbing designation are active)
Hide Prop Tag On Electrical Plan: omits a prop's tag from the electrical plan, but still draws the prop geometry
Is XXXX Architectural Prop: defines if said prop will be shown in the named automatically created Plumbing, Utility, or Electrical plans
Casework Catalogs
The catalog is created directly inside Studio.
In your Casework Catalog global setting you'll create your standard cabinetry - they usually represent cabinetries that matches a supplier portfolio, for example.
When creating a new entity, you'll get to select either a Base, Upper or Closet Shelf. This can not be edit in the future, so be intentional when creating it. The catalog will only define your width, name and default flooring override (i.e if that is a base cabinet, you can change to NONE so you never get flooring below your cabinetry).
The settings about how this cabinetry will behave in your model (depth, heights, etc…) are defined in a separated Global Setting called Casework Settings.
Prop & Casework Tags
For both props & casework, default Tags can be authored directly on catalog entities. The value of the Tag can also be overridden on individual instances or via the multi-entity Inspector when multiple pieces of casework are selected. Overrides will be communicated & can be cleared via the standard active/inherit icon in the Inspector.
Tag Placement & Rotation
Prop & Casework Tags generate at the center of the host by default.
Prop Tags can be offset in the X & Y direction via instance overrides. Casework Tags can be offset laterally from the host edge in the casework catalog or via instance overrides.
No matter how the plan is rotated, prop tags will always remain horizontal on the page. Casework tags rotate with the plan so that they remain parallel to the casework’s host edge. Text will never be presented upside down
For dynamic casework, a casework Tag will be generated in the center of each host edge
Identifying Properties of Casework for Studio & Estimate
Casework tags appear as a column in the System “Casework” data sequence & can be used to define measure groups in Estimate
Methods of identifying casework
Tag: Authored in the catalog & overridden on instances. Used to identify casework in plan documentation, Live Plans data tables, and Estimate.Name/Catalog ID(Catalog Casework only): Authored in the casework catalog. Used to select a casework type when placing instances. Does not report to Estimate.Display Name(Catalog Casework only): Optional property authored in the casework catalog. When defined, presented as the caseworkNamein Live Plans casework schedules. Does not report to Estimate.Entity Name: Authored on each instance of casework in the Inspector. When there is no
Display Nameavailable, presented as the caseworkNamein Live Plans casework schedules. Always reports to Estimate.
Casework Plan Notes Deprecation
Plan Notes are being replaced with casework Tags.
Existing Plan Notes can be deleted, but new ones can no longer be added. Users will be prompted to confirm the deletion of existing Plan Notes
Existing Plan Notes will still appear in Studio & in documentation. To support the transition to the new system, Casework Plan Notes & Tags are controlled via the same Casework Tags View Template & layer visibility categories.
Placing Props and Casework
From the Layout tab, there are separate tabs for Props and Casework. Both Props and Casework are edge hosted, meaning each item is placed relative to an assigned edge of a room.
When selected, Props and Casework will highlight in blue, with programming options in the Inspector panel. A set of built-in dimensions strings also appear and selecting these and typing in new dimensions will move the object.
Placing Props
Props can be placed using the Props Button in the Command Palette or the keyboard shortcut “SHIFT+P”.
Hold “SHIFT+P” on the keyboard.
A blue banner will appear at the top of the screen to show the command is active.
Select the Lateral Datum to align the prop to.
Select the Interior or Exterior prop Catalog.
Select the prop Type.
Click when the Room and Edge to host to are highlighted in blue in the Canvas.
Alternative ways to place and locate props:
A defined distance from the end of an Edge using the Edge ID field and the Placement field.
Utilizing built in dimension strings and the Horizontal Alignment and Placement Side fields.
Horizontal Alignment is the point at which the dimensions string touches the prop object.
Placement side is the whether the measurement is taken from the beginning or the end of the Edge.
Placement can be used to determine a percentage across the distance of and Edge. 50% would place the Prop in the middle of Edge 4.
Placement can also use the built in dimensions strings to place an prop object a defined distance from the beginning or the end of an Edge.
Props can be moved with the MOVE command or the shortcut ‘M’ and copied via ‘COPY’ or ‘C’, then the dimensions can be refined using the built-in dimension strings.
You'll also have the ability to OVERRIDE your Floor Plan Tag, and OFFSET placements if needed.
Placing Casework
Casework can be placed via the Casework button on the Command Palette or the keyboard shortcut “SHIFT+C”.
Hold “SHIFT+C” on the keyboard.
A blue banner will appear at the top of the screen to show the command is active.
Select the Size Mode to Dynamic or Fixed casework.
Select the casework Type.
Select the casework Width.
Click when the Room and Edge to host to are highlighted in blue in the Canvas.
You can also select your room > go to Layout inspector > Casework and click on the "+” to manually add it.
There are 3 Casework Placement Options: Dynamic Width, Fixed Width and Catalog:
Dynamic Width allows the casework to be quickly applied to the entire width of and edge, and even multiple Edges in the model.
is placed using the Host Room Edges by adding or subtracting host edges.
Fixed Width allows the placement of a predefined width Casework to be placed in the model similarly to Props.
Catalog Casework can be created in the Engine > Global Settings > Casework Catalog, by creating catalog items to be used and shared in multiple models. (See more below about casework catalogs).
Fixed and Catalog Items are placed similarly to Props using the Placement Menu (see above image).
Fixed and Catalog Casework can be moved and copied with the MOVE command or the shortcut ‘M’ and copied via ‘COPY’ or ‘C’.
And there are 4 Types of Casework:
Generic casework can be used for modeling freeform masses. This can be useful for modeling walls, half walls & soffits.
Base Cabinets include toe kicks and counter tops.
Upper Cabinets have dashed 2D lines by default to show they are above the floor.
Closet Shelves are thin platforms, typically used in closets. Can have an automated rod applied, that will generate the dashed lines to represent it.
TIP: Once you place a Catalog Casework, you can't change the TYPE of it. So when you add a base catalog instance, you'll get a toe kick added - cause the catalog defined that instance to have the settings of a base cabinetry. DO NOT duplicate it, and change to an Upper/Wall Catalog Casework, or you'll keep the toe kick in your upper cabinetry. Make sure to manually place it again. You can duplicate instances to accelerate your process, just make sure you are not intending to change the TYPE.
